P28 - Water is heavier than ice?

Summer break is about to end in few days. This summer break we did fun questions everyday. The question could be learning a mathematics trick or any craft item or writing few lines on some topic. Deeksha, Ovee and Inu participated with full enthusiasm.

Today's fun question was

All three of them gave the different replies. It is nice to see that they tried to give the logic for their answers. One of them said that the water and ice will have the same weight as we have taken the same amount of water and refrigerated it. Another marked that the ice will be heavier as it is in solid state and in solid state molecules are stuck tightly together. The last answer was water will be heavier because it has less density. After reading their answers, I asked them whether they had lime water in summers. Have they ever put ice-cubes in a glass of water. What they have observed when they put a ice-cube in water, whether it floats or it sinks down. Of-course the ice-cubes floats on water. So the water is heavier than the ice. 

Then we did an experiment to support our answer.

 

What we need:

  • Two bowls
  • Ice and water
  • Balance Scale

 

Experiment:  

Take one bowl full of ice and one bowl filled with water. Measure the weight of both the bowls and compare. We didn't had any balance scale at home. So, we created one with the help of hanger, zip-lock bags and fruit bags.


Here, we can clearly see that the water is heavier than the ice. Congratulations Ovee, your answer was correct. And that is the reason why icebergs float over the sea.
 
Now, lets understand what happen when we try to refrigerate the water in a bowl. Water molecules loses energy and forms more stable hydrogen bonds (H-bond) when refrigerated. This processes decreases the density as each water molecules is held away a distance equal to the length of each H-bond from each water molecules.
 
The relations between density and mass (weight) is  mass = density * volume.
