P6 - Happy You = Happy Child

Share this:

Happiness is a choice.
You can choose to be happy.

All of us are very busy in life and don't have time for anything. But a little time for you and your hobby will give you immense pleasure. I am sharing some of my work which help me enjoy being me.

Zentangle Art is my new hobby these days (inspired by my sister Shivya Singhal). It's a technique of drawing with repetitive patterns, you can relate it to mehandi designs. More about this can be found on https://zentangle.com/

P4 - Different states of Water

Share this:

Today, when I was cooking food, she came and asked can you play with me. I said after my cooking is done. She was little unhappy with my answer and asked, mumma what should I do.

As always, my answer was a question. I asked her, do you know the different states of water. She was happy and said, 'wow, we will do some experiment!'. Now, she also knows that if I ask a question, we are going to do some experiment but this one was a little one.

I replied, may be but first you tell me what will happen if we put water in refrigerator. Of course, she knew this one. She said, it will become ice. I said yes, this means it will change its state from liquid (water) to solid (ice).

My second question was, what will happen if we boil water. This one was tough for her. I put some water to boil. She noticed that water evaporates. I told her this is gas state

She was very happy when I told that the same experiment is demonstrated to grade 2 students in her school.

P3 - Sunlight & Colours

Share this:

She observed a shining Sun and said mumma its too hot today, while we were walking back from school bus. I asked her, can you tell me the colour of sunlight. She said white or yellow... not sure.

My second question was very easy. I asked, what will happen if you keep ice cube in sunlight. She said I don't know but if you remove ice from refrigerator, it will melt.

Her answer motivated me do some experiment. First, we kept two ice cubes, one in sunlight and another in shade... she observed that the one in sunlight melts faster. It was obvious to her...

Next, we did an experiment to learn different colours have different heat absorbing capacity. We took four different colour papers and four same size ice cube. We put one ice cube on each paper and placed all the papers in sunlight.

Observation: The black paper ice cube melts fastest and white paper ice cube melts very slowly.

We both learnt that black colour is the best heat absorber as it absorb all colour rays. White colour reflects all colour rays and hence the poor heat absorber. All other colours only reflects the colour they appear and absorb all other colours. Like red colour reflects only red rays and absorb all other colour rays.

You can also use the colourful ice cubes to do this experiment.

P2 - Learning Directions

Share this:

Learning directions was the activity for yesterday...

First, I explained her about the four directions: North, South, East and West.

I asked her that did you ever noticed the direction of the Sun... where it rise and how it travels. She said, 'Mummy, In morning it comes in our balcony and in evening it comes in the front door.'

Good that she noticed the direction the Sunrise. Then, I told her "Sun always rise from East and moves in East to West direction". So, now she knew the east direction in our house. With the help of direction chart, she can now tell all the directions. We started playing with directions.

Like, I asked her in which direction our Kitchen is?  or which direction our study table is?
She always replied with the correct answer. Very important learning that directions are always respective to your location. Same as left and right, if you change your position, left and right also change.

We bring the India map then. I marked the direction in the map. Then played one more game. I asked her which direction Mausi lives or which direction Nana-Nani lives. Again we both enjoyed the game with great learning.

The fun part to the activity was, I had compass. Matching the red line with N was really a fun activity for her. She also verified that sun tells us the right direction. It really rise from east daily... WOW!!!

We also did an experiment to learn about direction without using compass in a place where we have not seen the Sunrise. We took a water bottle in sun, put it on ground and noted the direction of it's shadow. After 20 min., we again noted the shadow of the bottle. The shadow moved.

Learning: The shadow of bottle moves in opposite direction of Sun. This means the direction in which Shadow is moving is from West to East.

Now we both know how to tell direction with the help of Sun.

Kids always have lot of questions and after thinking for some time she asked how can someone know direction in night... we don't have Sun in night.

I explained her little about Pole Start / North Start / Dhruv tara. Little about big dipper. It is difficult to explain all that without showing. Unfortunately, we can't see all this in our city because of pollution. She is now more excited to go to Dada's place in July as she can see all this in clear sky there.

I told her that if you stand facing the north star, you are facing North and behind you is South.

Great learning for 5 year old. We both enjoyed this learning.

P1 - Never stop looking up

Share this:

She made this painting with my help. Old work but close to my heart so sharing with you all...

When we were making, she asked me what is the meaning of never stop looking up... I started explaining and in first line translated it in Hindi... Without waiting for a second she interrupted  me and said ma don’t look up and ask Papa also not to look up. I was surprised with her response and waited her to complete... she said if you will not look up, you will never go in sky and die. I want to live with you and Papa. So please don’t look up.

So innocent kids are...

Of course, I tried to explain her the real meaning... here is what she understood

My Introduction

Share this:

Hey, I am Deepti, Mother of a 5 years old daughter, Praganya. She is my life...
I am learning and enjoying my motherhood... She is very innocent, cute and full of life, like all the kids in the world. She likes painting, gymnastics, skating, art and craft, cycling, playing badminton, learning new things and playing with her friends.

Professionally, I am doctorate in Computer Science from IIIT, Hyderabad. After Ph.D., I was working as an associate professor in an engineering college.  But I enjoy teaching and playing with my daughter more then teaching and learning with engineering students. While, I was teaching in college, I felt bad as none of the student in class was coming to learn, they use to come for attendance. So, no one is actually interested to listen what I was teaching. It was so boring... I quit my job.

Now, I am learning all old things, games and concepts with my daughter again. Today thought of sharing my experience with you all.. so, started writing this blog.

I will try to share all the activities we two do together.
